Color, Black & White, Monochrome

A few thoughts on the color shades of photography:

The primary additive colors for light are red, green, and blue; the primary subtractive colors (which give the primary additive colors when subtracted from white light) are magenta, cyan, and yellow.  Put all of the various color pixels together and you end up with one great color image.

Black and White is a monochrome image using black as the color.

A Monochrome photo is an image made of one color plus shades of that one color such as black and various shades, or blue and various shades of blue.

Comparing the three images below, which do you prefer, the “color”, the “black and white” or the “monochrome”?

Overcast and Drab Turned Around

I met with Gina and Nick late last week.  They had flown into the Florida Keys for a friends wedding and wanted to create their own engagement photos while in Key Largo.  The weather was overcast and generally yucky do to tropical storm Debby.  If you’ve ever wondered why you see photographers using flash during the day time these samples will illustrate why.  The first image in the sequence below shows just how drab it was. The images that follow were created the same way (aperture priority) but with fill flash.  Ambient light provided the overall exposure for the image and the flash filled in the scene with enough light to bring up the colors and detail.  The results are considerably different.  In those images where the fill seems to be coming from a different angle it is — the flash was moved off camera.   The side lighting on the dock used the flash off to the right side, below and about 5 feet from the camera.  The Royal Poinciana was done with fill flash coming up from the bottom at arms length left of the camera.  So the next time you think the drab scene will ruin the photo opportunity, turn on the flash and use it to fill in a little extra light, and to vary the result a bit more, move the flash off camera and turn the power of the flash up or down to change the result.

North Key Largo Missile Site Today

Nelson Sanchez and his wife Rosa took a few friends through a portion of the long ago decommissioned North Key Largo Missile Site on SR905.  The Battery B Nike site was operational in June 1965 and closed in June 1979.  The images below show the long since used radar control room, support towers for the radar domes that looked like golf balls, barracks, shower facilities and generator rooms.  The Key Largo HM40 Nike Hercules site is now under control of the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park.

Some of the images were taken using the High Dynamic Range technique with a little artistic license from me.  My thanks to Nelson for his workshop and to the information provided by him from historian Jerry Wilkinson.

ASMP Exhibit

I drove down to Key West Monday to see the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) South Florida Chapter ”Light of Florida” art exhibit at the The Studio of Key West (TSKW).  There were 1200 images submitted for review, 65 made the final cut and 40 were on display.  All of the images were printed with archival inks on archival paper and were available for purchase. One of my images, Orange Light on the Bay appeared.  See images below.  The exhibit will tour Florida at various venues for the next two years.

Changes to class schedule . . .

A few changes to the FKCC class schedule have occurred.  Digital photography at FKCC campus in Marathon has a new start date (see below) to attract more students.  The Introduction to Photoshop is on hold while FKCC approves classroom location changes.  Digital Photography on the Coral Shores campus of FKCC has started and if you sign up this week there is time to join the class.

The Matecumbe Studio Gallery
